Relative Velocity / Riverboat Simulator
Instructions for Students & Teachers
Use the simulator above to explore the concept of relative velocity in one and two dimensions. For one dimensional motion you can select how many elements you want in your scenario so you can control the complexity, you can also pick the different frames of reference so you can see how the relative velocity of each element changes depending on who's perspective you're measuring from. For two dimensional motion this simulator allows you to fully explore the classic "riverboat problems" that are an integral part of every mechanics class. Students can also enable "target practice mode" for this in order to generate infinite practice problems for themselves so they practice the skill until they achieve mastery.

Encourage students to predict the impact point before firing. This builds conceptual links between kinematic equations and visual outcomes. For AP students, focus on the independence of horizontal and vertical velocity components by isolating variables during multiple trials.
